How Flex Nights Work

Three types of adventures, more flexibility.

8-Night Flex

  • Aaron is on location for 8 straight nights.
  • A $700 buy-in reserves 2 shooting nights, chosen at registration from the workshop window.
  • Selected nights are chosen at registration so nightly caps stay manageable.
  • A $1,000 upfront payment reserves 4 total shooting nights, also chosen at registration.
  • Each night caps at 8 students; the workshop can sell up to 16 total student spots.
  • Additional nights can be added on-site for $250/night if weather, space, and schedule allow.

3-Night Adventures

  • $700 buys any 2 of the 3 nights.
  • $850 gets all 3 nights upfront.
  • The third night can also be added on-site for $250 if weather looks good.

4-Night Adventures

  • $700 buys into the workshop for 2 nights.
  • $1,000 gets all 4 nights upfront.
  • Extra nights can be added on-site for $250/night if conditions are good.
  • These cap at 8 students total, not 16.
  • There are only 4 available nights.

What to expect

  • In-the-field instruction
  • Sunset before Milky Way is rare but happens when convenient
  • Dinner together most evenings when timing allows
  • Weather-flexible planning
  • Hands-on settings and composition help
  • 1-Hour Zoom call Processing help after workshop
  • Self-driving unless noted
  • Lodging not included unless noted

Difficulty, fitness & sleep

  • Beginner Friendly means you can come having never done any Milky Way before. Locations are awesome for all levels.
  • Moderate means the nights are longer, execution may require different skills like blending, tracking and/or stacking. Winter + summer panoramas need two sessions a night making it more taxing but awesome!
  • Moderate to Experienced means extra difficulties like more hiking, new techniques like focus stacking and the need to execute your camera quickly for fleeting moments. Faroes adds international travel, wet weather, and changing island conditions.

Why Photog Adventures

Student-first field instruction. Flexible plans. Real 1-on-1 help at your tripod.

Aaron King of Photog Adventures is known for never working on his own photography during workshops. These trips are built so he can focus 100% on you! Aaron stays at your tripod, helps throughout the night, and gives you the 1-on-1 support you need to leave with more confidence in your settings, star focus, composition, and ability to adapt to real conditions when you are out next time on your own.

FAQ

Straight answers before you travel.

Are hotels included?

Usually no. Lodging is not included unless a specific workshop says otherwise.

Do I need to be advanced?

No. You should know your camera basics. Especially how to use your larger back screen, how to digitally zoom in live for focus & quickly switch from auto focus to manual focus. But field instruction includes settings, composition, and planning help.

Do I drive myself?

Most U.S. workshops are self-driving unless noted. International workshops may use different logistics.

What happens if weather is bad?

Plans adapt around clouds, wind, tides, moon, and access. Flex nights help avoid forcing bad conditions.

What gear do I need?

A camera with manual controls, good tripod, L-bracket or at least an easy ability to switch between Landscape and Portrait orientation, a wide & fast lens of f2.8 or greater like f1.4, extra memory cards, extra batteries, headlamp, and weather-appropriate clothing are the basics.

Are meals included?

Meals are not included. We typically eat one meal a day together when timing allows. Often we will eat Breakfast and Dinner together so we can meet in the morning to plan our next location based on that day's weather.

Why do some workshops use flex nights?

Flex nights are possible when I can do two workshops in the same area back-to-back like along the Oregon Coast and Southern Utah, allowing you to just need to commit to the core workshop and be able to add nights when conditions make it possible to continue the adventure! The Flex option in the 3-night and 4-night workshops keeps the costs down for you and allows you to not have a bad weather night be on your dime. But if weather is great every night - which happens a lot - you will have wanted to come out with us every night so committing to all nights up-front is a great strategy & most affordable when done at registration.

Is Faroes different from the Milky Way workshops?

Yes. Faroes is a landscape photography trip focused on weather, coastlines, villages, and dramatic light. Spring of Fall Faroe Islands adventures often have Aurora nights too!
