Secret
Sand Cave
Milky Way Adventure
WHEN: MARCH  6th, 7th or 8th | APRIL 3rd, 4th or 5th
WHERE: Secret Sand Cave near KANAB, UT
WHO: Photographers of all skill levels!

FITNESS LEVEL: MODERATE to EASY! Yes you have to huff and puff up a sandy hill for about 100 yards of the hike to the cave. It is a short hike. Nothing that you can't successfully traverse by taking it slow. You will wish you weren't walking up the sandy hill while you are doing it, but it won't hurt you. As long as you don't have any heart conditions that make the stress of huffing and puffing a health risk and you will be perfectly fine!

WHY THE SAND CAVE?
Milky Way in the desert is amazing...but what if you were in a perfectly shaped cave that had a sand dune in it like a movie set designed to celebrate an alien planet? Yes, that is what this Sand Cave is like! It is a crazy unique, just barely becoming more commonly known among Milky Way Photographers. Come get your portfolio image before all your friends have their own image from this location!

DO I NEED A TRACKER?
Absolutely great if you have one! The biggest challenge of using a tracker is giving yourself more work in post-processing. You have a SKY IMAGE and a FOREGROUND IMAGE. Unless you are a stacker and have even more images to work with. In this scenario, the best way to take advantage of the Sand Cave is to do a different exposure for the SAND and CAVE so you may take one or even TWO foreground captures to get the great final composition that you want. This means you already have to merge a SKY and a FOREGROUND image most likely anyway, so might as well make the sky image even stronger with the power of a star tracker like the Move-Shoot-Move, Skywatch Star Adventurer or an iOptron version.

Devil's Garden
  • Day of Adventure: Get to Kanab no later than Midnight. We will be arriving at our hiking location no later than 1am. So make sure you have made it to your hotel in Kanab by Midnight so I can pick you up.
  • 6pm-7pm Dinner before heading out
  • Head to our sandy crazy road to get to the Sand Cave.
  • 1am Begin our hike to the Sand Cave.
  • 1:55pm to 2:45am MILKY WAY starts to RISE and will move into our perfect window in view from the cave. Depending on your favorite shape of the Sand Dune and Cave, you will either shoot early or wait for the Milky Way to rise more. Or both! You will have plenty of time to play with your favorite composition.
WHAT IS THE DRIVE LIKE?
Depending on the weather conditions of the day, it can either be a slippery muddy playground with moments of deep sand or just dry easy to get stuck in sandy areas. Getting there in a jeep with lots of clearance is absolutely critical!

HOW MUCH GEAR?
You will be one of THREE in the workshop. We have a pretty tight situation in the jeep that we drive through this road to get to the Sand Cave. You can come with TWO CAMERAS and TWO TRIPODS plus a star tracker or two if you would like. No problem. I don't recommend the weight but the hike is short enough that if you want to hurt your back you can. But if you can minimize it is much more comfortable. We just can't have two camera bags. Need to keep everything to a single camera bag to fit everyone's gear into the jeep, please.

Milky Way Photography is awesome but it can be VERY COLD depending on the location, so come ready for it!

This is what we recommend to take with you:
  • Camera with manual mode
  • Lenses you need are anything from 8mm-50mm and with the largest aperture possible! f1.2 to f3.5 are great options! Bring your 50mm, and anything else you would like. Telephoto lens gigapanos can be great! Just don't forget your widest and largest aperture lenses at home!

Flying, Driving & Hotels?
Flying in? Driving?
Getting to Kanab is best from the Las Vegas airport. For price and speed of travel, the Las Vegas Airport works best. If you need to come in from Salt Lake, the drive is just a little over an hour longer. Find your best price at Las Vegas and see you in Kanab!
Hotels?
Kanab has many hotel, AirBNB and RV/Camping options. I don't have any one location to recommend that you choose. Simply find the best accommodations for how much you want to spend and what comfort level you enjoy. This adventure WILL keep you out from 1am to 4-5am in the morning. So pick somewhere you can sleep comfortably once back in your room that morning.
Camping?
Loads of options! I don't know of many personally but a cursory google search will get you plenty of options to choose from. A popular choice has been the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. An extra night before or after the adventure to the Sand Cave and you can get another night of Milky Way from merely a few yards from your tent! I personally will be staying in a hotel so I can get some good dark sleep once we are back.
