Frequently Asked Questions
What do you bring?
Milky Way Photography is awesome but it can be VERY COLD depending on the location, so come ready for it!

This is what we recommend to take with you:
  • Camera with manual mode
  • Lenses you need are anything from 8mm-50mm and with the largest aperture possible! f1.2 to f3.5 are great options! Bring your 50mm, and anything else you would like. Telephoto lens gigapanos can be great! Just don't forget your widest and largest aperture lenses at home!
  • Sturdy Tripod (REQUIRED!) make sure it is STURDY enough
  • L-Bracket (Optional) - Best for Panorama and switching orientation
  • Focusing Aid (Carson Lumiloupe: https://amzn.to/2lDwFjz)
  • Batteries – Fully charged and at least 2 per night!
  • Memory Cards – minimum 2 cards of 32GB each
  • Head lamp (red lamps are not required anymore)
  • Really Warm outdoor clothing for staying warm during the coldest hours of night and standing in the wind!
  • Gloves
  • Water Proof jacket & Pants
  • Laptop (OPTIONAL) for post-processing (Lightroom & Photoshop)
Flying, Driving & Hotels?
Flying in?
If you plan to fly in, JustFly.com and SkyScanner.com are great sites for Flight Deals. Flying in to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City are very similar distances to Escalante. Five hours either Airport! Very easy to drive in from either airport, so pick Las Vegas or Salt Lake based on the BEST price you can find.
Driving?
Getting TO Escalante is entirely up to you. But once we are in Escalante, I will drive everyone in a rented Truck to get to our locations for Milky Way. Whether it is heading inside the National Monument or out to Fairyland point, I drive the entire group. This makes it easy to make sure everyone makes to our locations as well makes it on the sometimes heinous dirt road that is in Escalante National Monument.
Hotels?
We all pick our favorite option for Hotel in Escalante. So go ahead and reserve a place you love! My favorite for luxury is Canyon Country Lodge. My favorite for price is Prospector Inn. New favorite for privacy and your own kitchen is Escalante Escapes. Look for options online and find the best fit for you.
TRIP DETAILS
In Escalante there are MANY great sites with just BRILLIANT foreground options to frame the Milky Way over! I LOVE Escalante! The best part of Escalante is that you get an awesome variety of rock formations, natural arches and unique settings like a tree growing out of a hole in just a 40-mile stretch of road! This workshop is designed to take advantage of these unique locations and give you an opportunity to do Milky Way Photography with varied methods of capture.

Devil's Garden is a fantastic location with over a dozen unique compositions! Everything is a walk of mere yards to get to our multiple options of foregrounds! An awesome collection of arches and vertical rock formations. Some formations small and some towering over us! Devil's Garden is a LOT of fun!

Dance Hall Rock is little bit of a hike and a heck of a climb up sloped slick rock. Not dangerous but rolling an ankle can happen EASILY here if you are not careful. We arrive during the light and will set up at the rock all along the hole where the tree is coming out and capture a great single image shot. After sunset there is an hour to two wait for the Milky Way to show up after Astronomical Twilight is over.

Sunset Arch is a location we have to hike to. The 1-mile hike is pathless and takes us meandering around sagebrush and plant life over sandy uneven terrain. The pathway to the Arch is mostly downhill making the walk back to the car uphill and much more tiring. But easy to get through with plenty of breaks. Our goal is to make it in time for Sunset light on the arch. It looks really amazing. Like at Dance Hall Rock, there is an hour to two wait for the Milky Way to show up.
